February Newsletter 2019

President's Report

Hi, hope all is good in your world and you are getting out on the
water or streams. What an excellent day we had at the club on Sunday the 3rd of Feb. The year kicked off with a very good comp sponsored by some very long-time supporters of the club, your club of course. A great big thank you to the team of Sportsworld, Begovich Builders, Spice Construction, Matamata Butchery, Wayne and Michelle Jones and of course that awesome beastie from the Holmes family.

Wasn’t it great to see Latham up the front large as life handing out the prizes, considering what the family has been through? I’m sure you’ll agree his smiling face was a breath of fresh air, and yes ok we are doting grandparents.

Congratulations to all the prize winners at the comp, there were some very nice fish weighed in.

The next comp is one eagerly waited for every year. Yes, it’s the “Big Fish Comp” and of course with the amazing support of Waharoa Transport it is a fantastic comp for kids. The big fish section is sponsored by, once again, long-time supporters of the club, Challenge Matamata, Matamata Veterinary Services, Plumb Co, King Electrical, and of course our whizz kid on outboard motors, Ken at Matamata Marine. Now, important to remember, you can fish on the Friday, starting at 5pm Thursday evening for game fish categories mentioned on the prize list. All other fish must be caught not before 5pm on the Friday and over the weekend as per normal. Of course you can catch the game fish on any of the three days, you may have heard many of our members have been right amongst the big fish recently. Sue Baker tagged and released a magnificent Blue Marlin. Arrum Ali, landed his first Marlin in New Zealand waters. Bryan Shepherd caught his first Marlin and just to make sure bagged a second one on the same trip. Both Arrum and Bryan were out on the good ship Leander with legendary skipper Vaughan Mitchell (Mitch) and leading the weight stakes at 116.80 kg. Phil Stevens caught his first Marlin out west on his own boat, his very happy crew on “Cool Change” were Bryan Shepard, Cameron Lamas and Josh Bungard, well done to you all.

Now let’s get a big crowd out on the water for the March comp, and as I said before thanks to Waharoa Transport, Glen and Sharron and the team. There will be great prizes for the little ones so get them out on the water all you parents and grandparents.
